The Circle

The Circle has been running since 28th February 2012 and has been a great success, with an average attendance of 20 people each week. It is held every Tuesday at Presteigne Youth Centre from 10.30am until 1.30pm and is run by Co-ordinator, Liz Gaine, assisted by a fantastic team of volunteers who serve refreshments, organise chair exercises, quizzes or just chat to members.

The name for ‘The Circle’ was suggested as an apt description of what we are trying to achieve with our drop-in – Our aim being that it is for everybody – no particular structure, just an inviting place for people to come in for a chat and to relax, with a chance to take part in the organised activities if you want to. Refreshments are available and soup is served at lunchtime. No charge is levied but donations are requested in order to cover the cost of the soup and refreshments.

Sue Watson-Jones from The Red Cross attends twice a month (on the first and third Tuesday of each month) to provide therapeutic massage for anyone who may be suffering from ill-health or stress. Emma Davies from Age Concern Cymru also attends on the second Tuesday of every month to provide a confidential service to the elderly who may require assistance with health, financial, social or personal issues.

Our attendees range between early 50s to over 90; they are a mixed group, but females are in the majority. We have seen an upward trend in the numbers of registered disabled people attending The Circle. One of our volunteers is a trained ‘Fit and Fun’ instructor and provides a weekly gentle exercise class to the group – This includes indoor Bowls, which we hope will encourage more men to attend.

Transport can be arranged to The Circle, if needed, by contacting Community Transport on 01544 267961. This offers the opportunity to those who are unable to travel independently, or who live in more remote areas, to access the service and help reduce isolation in rural areas – You will have to contribute to the journey cost and register as a member (See Community Transport for more info).
